The joy of old-school letter writing

Looking for some human connection during this lonely time? Try becoming a penpal! There are many different pen pal programs that would be excited to have high school students join. In my experience, being a penpal is a very rewarding and valuable experience. I have been writing to a fourth-grade girl in Atlanta and I love getting to read her letters and hear about her life.

During this time of social distancing, it is easy to feel hopeless and at a loss for vital human contact. Connecting through writing is a fun and easy way to feel like you have some allies in this unconventional time period. Receiving a letter in the mail and ripping open the envelope is always an exciting feeling, especially when so much of our communication happens online. Consider mixing it up a bit and sending someone a letter!

Some tips for being a successful pen pal:

  1. Keep it going. Your pen pal will be excited to have someone to hear from, so make sure you are checking the mail and responding to them. Do your part!

  2. Ask and answer questions. Asking questions is an easy way to get the ball rolling on a developing relationship. Try asking basic questions like “What do you do for fun?” or “What TV shows have you been watching recently?” Make sure to respond to your pen pal’s questions too! They will be interested in your responses.

  3. Be yourself. Write like you speak so the letter feels more natural and your pen pal can get a good sense of your personality.

  4. Think about what you want to say. Planning (even if it’s just in your head) what you want to say will help keep the letter organized and clear for the reader.

  5. Go beyond the letters. This is certainly optional and will not make or break your pen pal experience, but sending things like artwork, photos, or small gifts is a fun way to keep you and your pen pal engaged and connected.

Here are some pen pal program you can join:

If none of these programs interest you, there are many other resources to go about finding a pen pal. Many different programs exist and have more information online. If writing to a complete stranger seems too weird, you could even start by exchanging letters with a friend!
