Student-run writing centers are an up-and-coming idea that is slowly being implemented in many high schools to encourage students’ love for writing and peer collaboration. Though the idea of a student operated writing center is new for high schools, many colleges have had writing centers for years. I have visited five colleges, and each school had a successful writing center. A freshman at Franklin & Marshall College in Pennsylvania told me that every time she brings a paper to the writing center she gets an A. Additionally, she expressed that many professors will provide incentives such as extra credit for meeting a peer tutor at the center for help. Tutoring in a college writing center is also a great job opportunity for students who enjoy the craft of writing and working with their peers. Many universities have a plethora of resources for students who want extra help, but a writing center is a great way to aid the transition from high school level writing to college level writing.
