Use Your Words.

“Words move hearts and hearts move limbs.”

As a student at Burlington High School, it may seem like there is nothing you can do about a war overseas. It feels hopeless, watching the news and seeing the horrible things happening, wondering if it will ever get better.

I’m here to tell you that there are things that you can do, and it starts with using your words.

Writing can be used to spread accurate information, awareness, donation links, and more to help the people of Ukraine. We asked students to write about these different things so we could share their thoughts and knowledge with you.

What are some things you learned about Ukraine?

There are millions of refugees in Ukraine, many in Poland. Certain organizations are actively working to donate millions of dollars to Ukraine. Additionally, adults and young children are actively being taken out of their homes and trying to leave Ukraine as soon as possible.

Why is it important that we help the refugees and citizens of Ukraine?

We would want to be helped if we were in the same position.

They are innocent in this entire situation, and are losing their homes and loved ones to a war they did not want any part in.

They are people. They are innocent. They are being attacked by a superpower that is far larger than them. The people of Ukraine do not deserve this treatment and they deserve any help that we can offer them.

What do you think you and your peers can do to help the people of Ukraine as students of Burlington High School?

Send letters, talk about Ukraine in class

We can donate to organizations that can help the people of Ukraine, as well as keeping up with the news and showing our support for the refugees.

Read articles such as the one that the New York Times put out. Take some time to donate to some of these organizations. Any amount of money helps. Additionally, people should take time to have conversations about what is happening. I know so many people that have no clue about what is happening in Ukraine, and it is important that people be educated on these issues.

Words are powerful in influencing people's hearts and minds and can motivate them to take action. Use this space to speak directly to the people of our community. Tell them what you believe needs to be done and why. Urge them to take action. What can ONE person do to make a difference?

We have the power to help the people of Ukraine. I know it seems like they are so far away, but we can donate and have conversations to help this cause.

It is important to show our support for Ukraine. We would want the same support if we were in their position.

If any of these responses resonate with you, please feel free to reach out to a writing fellow for more information about how you can use your words to cause valuable change. Additionally, take some time to look through the New York Times’ article linked below to gain more information on how to help those in Ukraine. All it takes is one voice to make a change. We have the power to be the voices that make a difference.
